Our 10 Fav Fall Things

While we don’t usually like to say goodbye to summer, especially this one, fall is one of our favourite seasons on Windswept Farm.

Time to break out our cozy sweaters, light a fire and snuggle up with that book we’ve been meaning to crack.

Here are our top 10 favourite fall things at Windswept Farm. And no, it doesn’t involve going out for PSLs (but that does sound quite nice...)

1. Changing Colours

Even though it only lasts for a few weeks, we LOVE watching the trees change colour on our farm. It is an absolutely stunning time of the year and we are so lucky we can fully embrace it, even from sitting indoors. This pic was taken from the end of our driveway on our way to school last week!

2. Harvesting our Winter Squash, Kale and Carrots

Harvesting veggies that we grew all summer is truly rewarding. We use our garden veggies in soups, stews, salads, and sides, and boy oh boy, are they ever tasty. Try our vegetarian Moroccan Chickpea Stew! Stay tuned for our spaghetti squash post coming soon.

3. Buying a Sweater that will be a Staple in our Wardrobes

Enough said, right?

4. Baking Anything Pumpkin

Very controversial, we know, but pumpkin is just amazing and no one can change our minds about that. It is snuck into every fall recipe we are making these days, and we say snuck because Tim (picky Dad/husband) refuses to eat pumpkin voluntarily, but when he doesn't know it is there, we hear no complaints… win-win for all. Here is the recipe for our Apple Pumpkin Layer Cake with Cream Cheese Icing.

5. Changing our Decor

We don’t necessarily decorate for Halloween with the spooky graveyard anymore, but we do add fall touches indoors with small white pumpkins scattered on the dining table and festive wheat planters. We love a subtle colour scheme at this time of year. We also pick up pretty pumpkins for our front porch and planters with kale, grasses and peppers. Think grey, white and light pink pumpkins for a different look.

While we don't wait for special occasions to use our favourite pressed glasses, the ones below are from our special collection. We've added to it over the years and Sean George Pressed Glass is a godsend!

6. Picking Apples

As if you don't already know, picking apples is kinda the best thing to do in the fall. It takes about 30 seconds… unless you are stocking up for a year, but it is more about the outing than the actual picking. Throw on that cute fall sweater, your fav boots, a chic basket in hand and you are all set.

7. Visit the Pumpkin Patch

Just like the apple orchard… 30 seconds later you are done but you now have cute pumpkins to display and quite the photoshoot under your belt. Definitely not to be missed this season even if the trick or treaters won't be visiting. Morrison Pumpkin Farm is our fav, you can find it on Hwy 124 just south of Collingwood.

8. Jacket Season

POV: you have been staring at a fluffy jacket all September just for this moment, a chill in the air. You put it on and feel like a superhero, but since you have nowhere to go, you walk around the block hoping someone will notice how cute you look. Yeah, us too. (Except our neighbours are chickens, like literal chickens). Here are links to our fav fall jackets this season.

  • Faux Fur Lucky Brand Jacket Tess owns this and yes, it is the jacket she was referring to^ But Laurie may be seen wearing it on occasion!

Also, pair a jacket with a trendy tote bag like these ones from We're Not Really Alike

9. Forest Bathing

It sounds insane, but who's watching? Go on a fall hike and enjoy every moment by forest bathing. Find a smooth rock or patch of moss, sit down, close your eyes, take a deep breath in, and listen to the sounds of the forest. Feel the light shining through the trees and hitting you (and your cute fall coat mentioned above). Just take a moment to recognize how you feel, where you are and meditate for a minute! Perfect excuse to go for a fall hike with your furry friends too.

10. Lighting a Candle

Cliché, we know, but there is nothing like lighting a fall scented candle and the aroma spreading through the house. This season our favs include:
